Summary

Bibliometric studies provide an important contribution to the understanding of the production of research output, as measured by the production of scientific publications and of the impact of these publications as approximated by citation counts. They also allow us to understand the knowledge flows and collaboration between institutions at the institutional, national, and international level, as measured by co-authorships in scientific publications and patent citations. Hence, bibliometric methods allow us to evaluate scientific output, gauge their impact, indicate their trends, and map the collaboration between institutions.

For these reasons, MASTIC started the first bibliometric study in 2003, where data from 1955 to 2002 were captured and reported. This was followed by the second bibliometric study in 2008, the third in 2012, and the fourth in 2015, which covered data from 2001 to 2014. The National Bibliometric Study (2001-2017) is the fifth in a series of Bibliometric Studies conducted by MASTIC, covering data from 2001 to 2017. The results of this study are intended not only for the HLIs, GRIs, government agencies, research grant providers, and policy makers, but also for researchers and users of research results.
