Summary

The 2007 Global Innovation Index report is a document that measures and ranks the innovation performance of 107 countries and regions around the world. The report has four main objectives:

  • To provide a comprehensive framework and a set of indicators to measure innovation at the national level.
  • To rank countries and regions according to their innovation capabilities and outcomes.
  • To identify the strengths and weaknesses of each country and region in terms of innovation.
  • To provide policy recommendations and best practices to foster innovation.

The report uses 84 indicators across seven pillars: institutions and policies, human capacity, infrastructure, technological sophistication, business markets and capital, knowledge, and competitiveness. The report also includes a special chapter on the role of innovation in addressing the global challenges of health, climate change, and food security. The report was conceived at INSEAD as a formal model to help illuminate the degree to which individual nations and regions are currently responding to the challenge of innovation. The report was released in January 2007, when the global economy was flush with growth momentum and expectations. You can read the full report here or download it here.
