Alignment of the Global Innovation Index (GII) Accountability Mechanism Across Ministries/Agencies to Boost National Innovation Competitiveness
On November 5, 2025, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim chaired the National Science Council (NSC) meeting. During this meeting, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), through MASTIC, presented strategic steps to strengthen Malaysia’s performance in the Global Innovation Index (GII).
The meeting agreed to MOSTI’s recommendation for shared responsibility using a “Whole-of-Government Approach.” This plan aligns with 23 selected GII indicators relevant to the functions of each ministry and agency to ensure every department has a clear role in improving Malaysia’s standing in the GII, which is a key benchmark for national innovation and competitiveness.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Haji Fadillah Haji Yusof was present, and members of meeting also emphasized the need for:
- Improving funding for STI (Science, Technology, and Innovation);
- Coordinating mission-oriented R&D agendas; and
- Producing innovations that directly benefit the people and drive Malaysia as a high-technology nation aligned with MADANI values by 2030.
MOSTI remains committed to driving the national innovation ecosystem to be more organized, impactful, and competitive globally.
