Smart Soft Stretcher 3S

3S' or Smart Soft Stretcher is a uniquely designed stretcher that has triple functionalities. The first function is as a stretcher to carry any object that is weighing up to 150kg. Secondly, the Smart Soft Stretcher can also be used to wrap dead bodies and transport the dead bodies from one place to another. Thirdly, it also works as the packaging for the Dead Body Protector (DBPRO) that is used to cover the dead bodies and emergency signage. Semantic Image Processing Toolkit

This project describes an interactive environment whereby the semantic information can be collected and mapped to visual features in a systematic manner. The workbench developed allows the layered explorations of semantic features to complement and add value to a semantic model based on a structured feature extraction and image analysis. SCC Ammonia Tank Tester

Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in storage tanks for ammonia has been reported all over the world. The cracks depend on the type of steel, the impurities of ammonia, and the stresses in the materials. Cracks are mainly formed in welds and heat-affected zones. Ammonia is known as a very toxic and volatile liquid usually kept in large volume of 500 MT or so. Therefore the possible hazards associated with the ammonia can be enormous if leakages were to occur. There is a risk of initiating Ammonia SCC when the large industrial ammonia tanks are exposed to thermal stress and oxygen especially during tank commissioning period. A team of researchers at UNIMAS has designed, built and tested an ammonia tank SCC tester for industrial application,
specifically for investigating the above problem. The SCC tester has been successfully used for inspection and maintenance, as well as for studying crack propagation behavior of ammonia tanks.

Rapid Assessment of Bacillus Cereus Associated With Sago Processing

Sago processing industry is one of the highly potential industries in Sarawak. The exportation of sago starch from Sarawak is between 30,000 and 500,000 tons which generate a revenue of approximately US$3.4- 10.8 millions per year, being the most important crop after palm oil.
Bacillus cereus is an ubiquitous, Gram-positive bacteria which is commonly found in soil and food, especially the starchy food such as sago. The bacterium is an important foodborne pathogen that causes foodborne illness such as diarrhea, vomiting, meningitis and even death.
Hence, it is important to ensure the food safety of sago processing industry by assessing and identifying the level of microbial contamination.

Production of L-Lactic Acid from Fermentation of Hydrolyzed Sago Starch

Sago, which grows well with minimum care in swamp
and peat areas otherwise inhabitable for most other crops,
produces high yield of low-priced starch (25t starch/haJ
yr) (Ishizaki, 1997). Bioconversion of sago starch into
glucose is a sensible alternative since glucose (US$0.50/
kg) fetch a higher price than sago starch (US$0.20/kg).
Fermenting glucose to lactic acid (US$30-50/litre) will
certainly add further value to the end-product (Bujang,
2004). L-lactic acid, the natural isomer oflactic acid (found in our body), can be produced by microbial fermentation. Recent advances in the use of lactic acid for the production of biodegradable thermoplastics and cosmetics (skin care, toiletries, hair care products) have created an impetus in the lactate industries, which concomitantly acts as a catalyst for the growth of sago industries. The work in our laboratory has shown that hydrolysis of sago starch yields glucose (98%) which when fermented produces crude lactic acid (96%). This can be purified into L-lactic acid using powdered activated charcoal with a 98% recovery.

Optical Interferometry Surface Profiler System

Optical technique fo measuring suface texture has the advantages which are non-contacting and non-intrusive. This would means the measurement only depends on the light being shown on the sample. A common measurement method is the interferometry techniques. The sample is nickel plated polished substrate commonly employed in the manufacture on thin film media for disk drive and other optical based industries. The measurement is performed using the point method where a Coupled Charge Device (CCD) array is used for collecting the combined beam. This is then transferred to a processor to analyse the image and to calculate the phase using Fourier Transform. By mounting the sample onto a translational stage the whole of the area can then be measured.

Oil Palm Fiber/Glass Reinforced Aluminium Composite Laminates

Hybrid composite of aluminium laminates reinforced with Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunches (OPEFBF) and glass fibers were fabricated. OPEFBF can be found in abundance and by employing into composites, the fibre can be further use as composite material. This can also be considered to be environmentally friendly material whereby natural fibre is employed. In addition to this, the motivation in fabricating the composites is for mechanical surface applications, the thickness of the aluminium can be replaced using composite laminates. Novel Starch-based Gel Electrolyte Films Derived from Native Sago Starch

A novel starch-based gel electrolyte (SbGE)film with high ionic conductivity has been developed by utilizing native sago starch as the main precursor material. This novel SbGE film constitutes up to 80wt % of native sago starch and 20wt % of plasticizer, and is further being doped with varying amounts of different alkaline metal salts.Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements have shown that this novel SbGE film possesses comparatively high ionic conductivity at ambient conditions. The highest ionic conductivity achieved for the SbGE film sample with optimized composition at room temperature and a relative humidity of 100% was 2.55 X 10pow -3 Scm pow -1.

An image-based 3600 panorama and turnorama (object
movie) ""browser"" had been developed for networked mobile
devices deployed in collaborative virtual environments
(CVEs). The browser, named ""IlVRP2C"" ('micro virtual
reality for you to see,' in which the prefix 'micro' suggests its small size), runs on Java-enabled (Japanese NTT
DoCoMo) mobile phones, especially 505i-, 505iS-
, and 506i-series units, which have enough memory for
storing data and also high-quality liquid-crystal displays
(LCDs) for vivid color images. It provides a novel solution
to limitations associated with interactive stereographic
display of panoramic and turnoramic imagery. The Sharp
SH505i mobile phone, which features an LCD panel switchable
between full resolution 2D mode and auto-stereoscopic (no eye wear needed) 3D mode, is used to present stereo graphic images. The stereograms can be captured by a special camera system and software. IlVR4U2C, through a servent (server/client hybrid) HTTP r-7 TCP/IPgatewaydevelopedwith JakartaTomcat, is also integrated with other clients in our multimodal groupware suite and interoperates seamlessly with them.
