Pipeline Transportation of Heavy Crude Oil-In-Water Emulsion

The formation of emulsions during oil production is a costly problem, both in terms of chemicals used and production lost. Conventional pipelining is not suitable for transporting these heavy crudes from reservoir to the refinery because of the high viscosities involved. Generally, crude vicosities less than 300 cP are desired for pipelining. The diverse factors affecting the viscosity of a surfactant stabilized viscous crude oil-in-water emulsion for pipeline transportation were investigated. The study discloses that the stability of the oil-in-water emulsion stabilized by a nonionic, water soluble surfactant Triton -X100 increases as the surfactant concentration increases with subsequent decrease in O/W interfacial tension (IFT). Increasing the oil content and the speed of mixing of the emulsion resulted in increased emulsion stability. Several alternative transportation methods were proposed, including dilution with lighter crudes, injection of a water sheath around the viscous crude or preheating the crude. An alternative and promising technique was therefore,proposed to transport of viscous crudes as concentrated oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions

Pineapple Maturoty Inspection Using Colour Identification

In this project Imageg processing algorithm has been used to detect the maturity features and classification tools used to classify the pineapple into 'export, local market and not suitable for market'. System features were digital cameras scans the fruits and a software system processes the data to classify the maturity index of pineapples as they move along a series of conveyor. The fruits are then graded based on a maturity standard and subsequently allocated to a series of sort bins. The commercial potential is to perform the manufacturing process with less variability than human workers, resulting in greater control and consistency of product quality. Thus, to increased process control leads to effiecient use of materials, resulting in les scrap.

An efficient and well-designed electrical energy control system can reduce energy consumption and hence reduce the expenditure on energy use. The main control strategy in energy saving system is to automatically control the usage of electrical energy and change of behaviors to reduce the electrical energy wastage. Besides that, the system allows you to have light when you need it and save energy when you do not need the energy. The simple design of low cost infra red controlled energy saving systems permits easy installation and prolong the energy-efficient operation. This energy saving system allows the user to maintain a minimum lighting level at reduced power consumption when areas are not occupied, then gives almost full light output when required. A low cost Infra Red sensor is integrated with a Peripheral Interface Controller (PIC) to provide an energy saving system. The Infra Red sensor detects the presence of human and modulates the signal from the sensor to the micro-controller. The micro-controller then executes automatic switching ON and OFF of electrical appliances. Switching off the appliances in the absent of human can reduce energy wastage. A unique and compact system which comprises of a low cost Infra Red sensor and an intelligent micro-controller (PIC) to perform energy saving automatically. Appliances will be switched on only when it is required. The system can be made inconspicuous by placing it on the door frame. The sensor captures relative motion and generates a signal to the micro-controller. System is reliable, low cost, simple to on stall and maintain and easy to mass produce.

Novel Flow Improver for Gas Oil Pipelines Transportation Driven from Hibiscus Leaves Waste

Polymers improve the flow in pipelines but create problems as they can toxic, not biodegradable and expensive. The present invention introduces a novel drag reducing agent driven from agricultural waste and can act as a powerful flow improver in pipelines of hydrocarbon liquids. The new additive is cheap, environmentally friendly and biodegradable. The drag reduction performance was tested using a liquid circulation system built for this invention. The closed loop system consisted of three pipes of different diameters (0.0125, 0.0254 and 0.0381m) and four testing section for each. The results showed that the new flow improver had a huge potential to improve the flow in pipelines carrying gas oil. The new flow improver reduced 58% of the pumping power dissipated in pipelines, which means saving of 58% of the pumping power dissipated during transportation by the addiction of only 0.08% additive to the main flow.
