Water Recycling Machine - Ris-MECTRON

The Water Recycling Machine or Ris-MECTRON is a compact, economical and high grade water recycling device to reprocess and recycle waste from the distillation process. The machine comprises of a storage tank, water pump, refrgerated cooling system, and a stop-ball water controller. It is equipped with an electronic circuit board for controlling and monitoring temperature, humidity and water flow. The machine weighs 65 kilograms and is 19 inch High, 16 inch Wide and 42 inch Long (19"H x 16"W x 42"L). The water distillation process involves condensing steam through a colun cooled by running water to produce distilled water. An enormous amount of water will be used and flushed out into the drain by the distriller condenser during the distillation process. This is a waste of a very valuable resource.

Typhi Carrier DNA

Typhoid is a major public health problem. It is caused by the bacteria Salmonella typhi which is transmitted via food prepared by food handlers who are carriers. The current method for diagnosis of typhoid carriers is by stool culture which produces results within 2-7 days, has low isolation rate (2-5%), it is labour intensive and expensive since multiple stool cultures need to be performed. Hence, there is rapid, specific, sensitive, cost effective, simple to perform and without need for cold chain for transportion and storage. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is one of the most common DNA-based techniques used for microbial diagnostics. Although sensitive, specific and rapid its reagents have to be transported via cold storage. Also, repeated freeze-thawing and multiple pipetting of reafents can give erroneous results.

The majority of mouthwash products that are popular in our Islamic community are not free from alcohol. There are two main issues with alcohol-based mouthwashes: Sharia compliance for Islamic consumer and scientifically, the possible correlation with developing oral cancer. Therefore, we have work together with QHERB Trading to produce a novel herbal mouthwash product from our local Malaysian plant (root water extract) which not only show the potential to kill oral-microbes but interestingly, can has low-levels of anti-oxidant and inhibit the growth of the osteosarcoma cells and tongue carcinoma cells.

Locally Produced Dental Sponge As A Haemostatic Agent

This invention to produce Dental Sponge as a haemosthatic agent for use in dentistry. Extraction of teeth causes bleeding and resorption of alveolar bone. Bleeding after extraction of teeth should be stopped before the patient is discharged. A haemosthatic agent is often used in cases of profuse bleeding or prolonged bleeding. In this situation a good haemosthatic agent is very useful. Commercial haemosthatic agents available in our market are expensive and most of them are produced from animal gelatin and therefore not acceptable for some segment of community.

Dental sponge was prepared from local calf bone and underwent a through processing techniques. Endotoxin level assay was determined, surface properties were investigated in pore sizes and water uptake ability were measured. Biological evaluation was carried out testing for its cytotoxicity on human fibroblast cell lines. In vivo studies were done on sheep model. Bleeding time was evaluated in extraction sockets of sheep and the alveolar bone height was measured before and 2 months post-extraction in a case control study. There was a statistically significant difference in haemostatic effect showing shorter bleeding time in group using dental sponge compared to its control.

KelFil Anterior Nanocomposite

Anterior composite is a dental restorative use to restore damage anterior teeth due to caries or trauma. Their colour that mimics the natural tooth colour has resulted in a high demand by patients. Resin composite that normally used for dental restorative can be classified into different types which are depended on their filler sizes, such as micro composite, macro composite and hybrid composite. However those particular classifications of the resin composite have less aesthetic and low strength values. With a nanotechnology, systhesis of filler at nano size level can be achieved, resulted a nanocomposite with high aesthetic values and high strength. However, Commercial nanocomposite in the market is quite limited and also at a high price. For this reason, a group of researches at School of Dental Sciences, USM took the initiative and has successfully developed an anterior nanocomposite for dental filling known as KeLFiL. KeLFiL is an anterior resin composite where monodispered spherical silica nanoparticles synthesized via sol-gel process has been used as fillers. The product was nontoxic with properties such as flexural, compressive and hardness, water sorption and solubility that complied with the ISO standard of dental filling composites.

EZ Dysentery DNA

PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) is one of the common DNA-based technique used for detection and identification of pathogenic microorganisms. Speed, a good detection limit, selectivity, specificity, sensitivity and potential for automation are among its important advantages. The main limitation of PCR based tests is its reagents has be transported by cold storage and repeated freeze thawing and multipipeting of the reagents can give erroneous results.

Unlike the conventional PCR based test, the EZ Dysentery DNA kit contains thermostabilized PCR reagents in a single tube to detect for Shigella sonnei, Shigella flexneri and Shigella dysentery respectively within 3 hours. The test can be transported without cold chain and is simple to perform. When evaluated in a retrospective study, the test showed 100% sensitivity and specificity for the detection of S. flexneri and S. dysentery and 100% sensitivity and 97.8% specificity for S.sonnei.

Campylobacter jejuni causes 5-14% of all diarrhoeal diseases worlwide especially among children. Current diagnosis of the disease is via culture and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) method. The culture method is time consuming, laborious, low in sensitivity and is being replaced by PCR-based tests. PCR is one of the most common DNA-based techniques used for the detection and identification of pathogenic microorganisms. Speed, specificity and sensitivity are among its important advantages. Bal Ex: Home-based Video Module for Balance Exercises

Globally, balance disorders are common (affecting 1 in 10 people), serious and complicated. Management of balance disorder cases is challenging and controversial. A Sustainable Hatchery Technique For Stichopus Vastus And Stichopus Horrens

Unsustainable global overfishing activities and commercial exploitation of sea cucumbers have initiated CITES to classify these invertebrates as endangered species. In Malaysia, the wild population of this icon of our marine and Langkawi heritage is diminishing. Malaysia prima facie status as importer, exporter and consumer of the sea cucumber is now questionable. An innovative artificial propagation technique has been developed as a possible farming methodology to increase stocks of the Stichopodidae family of S. vastus and S. horrens. It involves broodstocks harvesting, spawning, sexual and asexual (agametic cloning) propagations and feeding activities integrated with mariculture. In induced spawning, techniques such as thermal variation, water-jet spray, addition of aquaculture food, and grinded male gonads were applied. Gametogenesis commences psot-external fertilization into auricularia stages before settlement as pentactulas' and juveniles. At this stage of the life cycle, 2.5 month old healthy juveniles were transfered into sea cages fitted with 1mm Teflon net and placed at 30-deep, reef-associated mariculture sites.

Wireless Electrical Switch based on Voice Command is a wireless electrical switch that controls any electrical appliances using voice commands. It uses a speaker independent speech recognition method where no prior system speaker training is required. Any Malay word regardless of syllabus combination can be used. This real-time system uses Malay vowel recognition algorithm that extracts features from spoken words via a conventional microphone. WebNRW: Web Based Non Revenue Water Management System

Non revenue water (NRW) figures for all the states in Malaysia are still above the Government targeted figures. The Government is keen on the NRW reduction programs as this will increased the revenue of the water authorities and indicated good governance.

Presently, NRW components have been identified by the water authority but there is no classification of NRW components in relation to the layout of the water distribution network. This is due to the unstructured data collection which resulted in difficulty in data consolidation. This make it impossible for the water authority to validate the NRW figures and therefore efforts in NRW reduction cannot be done.

A conceptual model for the water distribution network has to be formalized for the purpose of identifying the source/location of water loss and non revenue consumption. The NRW components will have to be classified according to the distribution network to capture the source and magnitude of the components. A work procedure to calculate and validate the NRW has to be formulated. This can be done when a detailed analysis on the distribution model and data is done.

This study introduces a new method for marketing agricultural products online that depends on visualizing the rural crops market for customers to expend the rural marketability. This study presents a WebCROPS prototype application for the case of Changlun, Kedah in Malaysia. WebCrops eliminates wholesalers, and focuses direct deals between farmers and customers.

VRTEM: Virtual Reality Technology In Museum

This study aims to identify the suitable model for building virtual museum and the essential elements for managing technology based product. Since the majority of these models derive from immersive virtual reality, a new architecture was formed with the basic elements involved in that environment. It has found that 3D models are a good attraction where user can experience the virtual as if it was reality. Lighting was used to brighten up the environment and the many interesting objects. Camera is used as an 'eye' view where users can freely walk through the environment from the camera view. collision detection was added in camera setting to ensure the collision in that environment truly occurs when user hits the project. While video are used to replace display screen in immersive environment, texture mapping are used to imitate reality surface objects. In addition, this study has discovered some design issues during development activity. This whole has adapted the Systems Development Research methodology. The key step includes the design and development of the Virtual Museum prototype itself. At the phase, besides management techniques of camera, lights and texture elements, the researcher also has succeeded in managing the walk through technique with collision detection and putting videos in VR. File management enable the researcher to access sources much easier. Indirectly, the development of this prototype has overcome these problems and answered the first research question all at one time. The outcome of this prototype was successfully developed using right development management techniques. Henceforth, this study also aims to test the usability of this system to users in using Technology Acceptance Model. Perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and perceived enjoyment are the independent variables in testing intention to use by visitor. Theoretical framework was produced and hypotheses were developed and tested using Spearmen Correlation Matrix and Regression Analysis. It has found that all hypotheses were supported, where the most influent factor is Perceived Usefulness followed by Perceived Enjoyment and Ease of Use. The output of this research is the Virtual Museum prototype of Kedah State Museum, provided with interactivity and ability to represent the real physical environment digitally. Hopefully this research can be a guideline to virtual museum developers to develop video application and three dimension walk through system construction.

Virtual Robot Arm In Assisting Robotics Students' Learning

Virtual Reality (VR), declared as the next step technologies after multimedia is believed to give a great impact in educational system as it provides alternative tools for teaching. With it enhance features it could be a turning point where it gives a new interesting and exciting environment that could motivate students' learning and interest in particular subjects. One of the benefits that VR offers is the ability to visualize physical object which student can have the trial and error session before actually practicing it on real things. Here comes to the point where the idea of having virtual robot in assisting students learning emerged. Instead of studying the physical robot in class, students can study the virtual robot on computer at home prior to class or even in the class itself

Students who ware taking the robotic courses in universities confront with the problems of the basic robotic principles understanding due to lack exposure. The same problem occurs in universities as more robotics equipment is needed to fulfill the needs of more students. The major problem facing many institution proposing a course in robotic is amount and type of students' exposure the real robots. It is important for the students to be exposed to the robots in their learning process. Due to the physical robot being expensive, many academics institution cannot facilitate enough robots to the entire class. Therefore, utilizing VR as a tool to develop fully-functional 3D virtual robots can substantially minimize the ownership cost.

This project focuses on utilizing VR technology for development of virtual robot to assist students' leaning. VR is a good solution to the hardware and time saving teaching method problem. This is due to its pervasive in its applications; the cost of the technology will eventually drop and the quality of experiences with VR system will improve.

With the prototype of virtual robot developed, its potential to oversea not only education but in construction, manufacturing, advertisement and marketing. For an example, firms and company can control their robot from the virtual robot. Training can be done preliminary by using virtual robot before handling physical robot. Hence this could reduce the cost of error during the manipulation of the physical robot.

The prototype developed can be commercialised to all of the institution which are teaching the robotics. It also have a potential to be commercialised to other industries which involved the robotic course.

Virtual Property Visualization And Marketing Solution

One of the problems of marketing properties in Malaysia is that the buyers have to be financially committed before they are able to view the interested properties. This sometimes creates dissatisfaction among the buyers who wish to see the real properties before making any financial commitment. Consequently, many potential buyers face the problems of effectively searching for properties that comply with their specification. Building visualization based on the conventional technique such as blueprint, architectural drawing, cardboard model and predefined walkthrough animation have been used by architects, designers and building developers to explain their ideas to their clients. They are well known to be proficient in three-dimensional visualization from two-dimensional maps. However, their clients generally are not. The implication of incomplete and improper visual presentation is that it will cause poor communication between the architects, designers, developers and their clients which will normally ends up with clients' lost. This research suggest a technique for virtual building visualization and inspection and investigates how this technique helps in producing a complete, proper and effective visual building presentation. It involves the utilization of tools that are common amongst architects, engineers and designers i.e Auto CAD and 3DS Max, and Quest 3D for the creation of the prototype.
