Inovasi ini terhasil semasa menjalankan kajian pemantauan dan
pengawalan serangan ektoparasit pada ikan ternakan di sangkar.Dalam tempoh kajian tersebut, pemerhatian kasar pada benih ikanyang dijangkiti lintah laut menunjukkan tanda-tanda klinikal seperti pendarahan dan luka di badan, mata atau sirip pada setiap bulan pertama kemasukan benih ke sangkar. Inovasi penggunaan pati minyak kayu manis komersil dalam diet ikan kerapu selama 2 minggu di peringkat hatceri merupakan satu usaha meningkatkan daya tahan ikan terhadap semua serangan penyakit sebelum dipindahkan ke sangkar. Aplikasi pati minyak kayu manis komersil didapati dapat mengurangkan sebanyak 70% tanda-tanda klinikal yang biasa dikesan pada bulan pertama kemasukan benih dalam sangkar. Begitu
juga dengan pengurangan 20% jangkitan parasit lintah laut pada benih ikan kerapu dalam sangkar pada minggu 4. Inovasi ini mudah digunakan dan diapplikasi pada 2 minggu pertama sebelum benih ikan kerapu dimasukkan ke sangkar. Inovasi ini masih dalam peringkat penambahbaikan dari segi kaedah penyimpanan di lokasi sangkar.

Inovasi ini tercetus semasa mencari penyelesaian kepada masalah serangan ektoparasit iaitu lintah laut dalam ternakan ikan kerapu.Inovasi ini menggunakan pendekatan saintifik maklumat kitaran hidup parasit.Inovasi ini boleh mengurangkan bilangan parasit lintah laut pada ikan dan seterusnya mengurangkan risiko ancaman pesakit sekundari seperti penyakit sisik tanggal, reput ekor dan sirip,Keadaan bentuk inovasi turut mengurangkan masalah kanibalisma dalam ternakan ikan kerapu di dalaam sangkar dan sekaligus meningkatkan produktiviti ternakan dan sekaligus meningkatkan pengeluaran ikan ternak marin.
Konsep ini adalah menggunakan substrat yabf diletakkan dalam sangkar ikan kerapu bagi tujuan lintah melekat dan bertelur di substrat tersebut dan dalam masa tertentu, substrat tersebut perlu dikeluarkan daripada sangkar ikan untuk tujuan pemutusan kitaran hidup lintah.

Cacing Nightcrawlers :Makanan Tambahan Bernutrien Untuk Induk Udang Galah

Untuk menjimatkan kos makanan induk udang yang bebas penyakit,FRI Pulau Sayak telah membangunkan teknik penghasilan cacing African Nightcrawlers (Eudrilus sp.) dengan menggunakan tangkitangki yang tekah bocor atau rosak tanpa menggunakan najis haiwan.
Kajian penternakan cacing tanah Nightcrawlers telah dimulakan
pada pertengahan tahun 2011. Penternakan cacing menggunakan
30 unit tangki gentian kaca (100 kg) dengan dasar berbentuk kon untuk memudahkan aliran keluar air baja organik melalui salur air di bahagian bawah. Sebanyak 20 ekor induk Nightcrawlers dimasukkan ke dalam setiap tangki yang mengandungi 60 kg campuran tanah dan pasir. Pemberian campuran makanan khas berserta air diberikan setiap hari. Selepas tujuh bulan beroperasi, sebanyak 700-1,000 g cacing Nightcrawlers boleh dihasilkan setiap hari atau sebanyak 21 kg setiap bulan. Setelah penuaian, cacing tersebut dibersihkan dan sedia untuk diberi makan terus kepada induk udang galah atau dijual. Berdasarkan kaedah penjualan RM200/kg cacing adalah berserta 70% berat tanah,
maka berat kasar sebanyak 63 kg dengan pendapatan sehingga
sekurang-kurangnya RM12,000 sebulan boleh dicapai. Induk-induk liar diperolehi dan kajian ternakan menggunakan pelbagai nisbah campuran tanah dan pasir telah diuji. Hasil kajian mendapati, purata sebanyak 200 ekor benih-benih cacing Nightcrawlers bersaiz sekitar 10 mm terhasil daripada setiap ekor induk cacing Nightcrawlers dalam tempoh 12 hingga 14 hari. Tempoh enam hingga tujuh bulan diperlukan untuk benih-benih tersebut mencapai berat sekitar 1.5 g hingga 2.0 g seekor, sebelum dituai untuk dijadikan sebagai makanan
tambahan induk udang galah. Penyaringan virus Nodavirus udang pada cacing Nightcrawlers dibuat secara berkala menggunakan kaedah PCR untuk memastikan bahawa tiada virus Nodavirus dikesan pada cacing tersebut.

Dalam kajian ini, induk-induk tilapia merah dari pusat-pusat pembenihan dan kolam-kolam ternakan di Semenanjung Malaysia telah dikumpulkan dan penilian prestasi telah dijalankan di FRI Glami Lemi,Negeri Sembilan.Empat stok baka terbaik telah dipilih dan dikacuk dalam corak diallel yang lengkap dan keluarga yang terhasil dipindahkan ke Pusat Pemgembangan Akuakultur (PPA) di Jitra.

Pembangunan Baka Dan Penambaikan Genetik Udang Galah
(Macrobrachium Rosenbergii)


FRI Pulau Sayak telah menghasilkan induk domestikasi yang
dipertingkatkan dari segi genetik dan prestasi. Dengan adanya
program pembangunan baka ini produktiviti dapat ditingkatkan
dengan penggunaan induk-induk dari strain yang berkualiti. Selain prestasi yang baik, program ini juga mampu membekalkan induk sepanjang tahun tanpa dipengaruhi faktor permintaan dan cuaca. Dari segi penyakit pula, tidak ramai yang melakukan saringan terhadap induk yang digunakan. Jangkitan secara horizontal iaitu daripada induk kepada anak akan menjejaskan kadar hidup serta tumbesaran dikolam kelak. Hasil inovasi ini, bekalan induk yang diketahui status kesihatannya, prestasi tumbesaran dan keturunannya dapat digunakan secara meluas di negara ini.Dalam proses pembakaan ini, 4 sumber induk berbeza yang dikenali sebagai populasi asas telah digunakan. Sumber tersebut diperolehi daripada Sg Muda (Kedah), Sg Teluk Intan (Perak), Sg Timun (Negeri Sembilan) dan Sg Muar (Johor). Melalui kacukan secara sistematik dan
saintifik, 8 kumpulan baka yang baru diperolehi. Setiap baka dinilai dan baka yang terbaik digandaan untuk dijadikan induk. Seterusnya diedarkan kepada hatcheri yang memerlukannya. Saringan terhadap penyakit terutamanya bawaan virus keputusan 100% bebas daripada MrNv. Prestasi setiap baka pada setiap generasi dinilai berdasarkan jumlah peneluran dan prestasi dikolam. Dalam jangkamasa panjang,
pembangunan induk secara sistematik dan terancang dapat membantu menghasikan baka induk SPF dan induk membolehkan kebergantungan terhadap induk liar dikurangkan, bekalan rega berterusan dan ancaman biakbaka dalam diminimakan. Bekalan induk juga dijangka dapat dihasilkan sepanjang tahun tanpa dipengaruhi faktor musim. Selain itu program ini berjaya meningkat jumlah peneluran per induk.

Penggunaan Sprinkler Dalam Meningkatkan Pengeluaran
Benih Udang Galah


Satu teknik bagi mengatasi masalah ini di hatcheri telah dibangunkan iaitu dngan menggunakan sprinkler (alat penyiram) yang dipasang di dalam tangki asuhan benih. Penggunaan sprinkler telah membantu mengurangkan masalah kematian benih udang galah yang melekat pada dinding tangki dan sekaligus meningkatkan pengeluaran benihudang galah. Sprinkler dipasang dalam tangki pembenihan bermula pada peringkat 10 pembenihan mengikut kesesuaian dan keadaan tangki. Sprinkler dipasang di dalam atau di bahagian atas tangki. Alat ini akan menyemburkan air pada bahagian dinding tangki secara sekata dan seterusnya menolak larva yang melekat pada dinding
supaya jatuh kembali ke dalam tangki. Jumlah dan bilangan sprinkler bergantung kepada saiz tangki. Tangki berisipadu 2-3 tan hanya memerlukan satu unit sprinkler sahaja yang berharga RM 70.00.

Penghasilan makanan pematangan induk udang bebas penyakit (PrimEZeat) terdiri dari bhan-bahan segar yang diketahui formulasinya dalam bentuk pes melekit.Disediakan dengan pensterilan secara pemanasan untuk menghasilkan produk makanan lembab khas pematangan induk udang galah,udang laut dan ikan laut.Kajian pemakanan yang dilaksanakan keatas induk udang harimau dan udang galah berjaya menunjukkan bahawa PrimEZeat tidak membawa kesan negatif keatas kesihatan udang harimau Fekunditi induk udang galah yang diberi PrimEZeat didapati setara berbanding induk udang galah yang diberi makanan konvensional.

Protokol Ternakan Mikroalga Effisien Meningkatkan Produktiviti Ikan Marin

Inovasi yang dibangunkan adalah kaedah menggunakan pensterilan dry vapour. Teknik ini menggunakan inkubator yang diubahsuai menjadi oven pemanas pada suhu 125C untuk 2 jam atau 70C untuk 4 jam. Suhu ini sesuai untuk pensterilan air laut bagi tujuan ternakan mikroalga dalam kelalang 2 L. Kaedah ini dapat mensterilkan lebih banyak isipadu air laut berbanding dengan autoklaf yang hanya mempunyai isipadu pensterilan yang kecil.Kepekatan sel Nannochloropsis mencapai 50 juta sel/ml menyamai dengan kaedah menggunakan autoklaf. Ternakan 30 L dalam makmal basah dengan pendingin hawa dapat dielakkan dengan digantikan ternakan di luar bangunan dalam tangki kaca 50 L. Ini telah menjimatkan penggunaan tenaga elektrik.

Sistem Aruhan Zooplankton Dalam Ternakan Udang Harimau

Sistem ini dapat meningkatkan jumlah zooplankton di dalam kolam
ternakan udang marin dengan menggunakan detritus. Detritus
diperolehi daripada bahan-bahan terbuang, murah dan mudah
diperolehi seperti hampas soya, pelet yang rosak, tepung ikan,
dedak padi, sekam dan lain-lain.
Komponen tangki pengasingan terdiri daripada satu unit pam
separa tenggelam, tangki bersaiz 6 X 4 X 3, extension wayar
penyambung, alat pengawal masa (timer), skrin penapis 100 m,
blower dan paip. Pam bersaiz kecil adalah memadai untuk tujuan
pengepaman air dari kolam ke tangki pengasingan.

Xanthine Oxidase Inhibitors From Blumea Balsamifera DC: Molecular Basis

The leaves of Blumea balsamifera DC (Sembong) are traditionally used in conditions related to urolithiasis or kidney stone. The most common kidney stone is the calcium oxalate stone, however uric acid stones can be formed as a mixture of uric acid and calcium oxalate stones. Uric acid production is catalyzed by xanthine oxidase(XO). This enzyme damage of living tissues. Phytochemical investigation on the Blumea balsmifera leaves' extract resulted in the isolation of hydrocarbons, phytosterols and flavonoids. In this study, the inhibition of xanthine oxidase activity by the flavonoids was assessed.

Wb rapid - An Immunochromatography test for the rapid and accurate detection of Wuchereria bancrofti filaria infection

Lymphatic filariasis caused by Wuchereria bancrofti affects more than 100 million people in 80 countries. This mosquito-transmitted disease results in symptoms that include fever, lymphatic & renal damage, adenolymphangitis, hydrocoele, chyluria, lymphoedema and elephantiasis. Wb rapid is an immunochromatography-based rapid test for the detection of specific lgG to W. bancrofti. It employs BmSXP recombinant antigen which is immobilized on a membrane strip. If specific antibodies are present in the test sample (serum/plasma/blood), it forms an antibody-antigen complex with the immobilized antigen; and subsequently detection by a dye conjugated anti-human lgG, giving a pink-purplish coloured line/band. The control line contains goat anti-mouse lgG-dye conjugate, and serves as an indication of proper migration plus reagent control. The test demonstrated sensivity of 95-100% and specificity of 99-100%.

Waste to Wealth: A New Composite

Awareness towards enviromental impact had stimulated the interest for converting polystyrene from waste materials into value added-products so called from 'waste to wealth'. Recycling is one of the common and easy process for waste management. However, polystyrene foams have recycling limitations because it contains flame retardant material. In this invention, we overcome this problem by using a new technique of recycling whereby converting the waste polystyrene to a new resin. After extensive studies, the new resin applied as matrix material reinforces with oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) fiber to produce new composite materials. Excellent adhesion between the polystyrene resin and the EFB fiber had exhibit promising results on tensile, flexural and impact properties. In addition, the new composite materials are low weight, low water uptake and customizable as can be applied in furniture.

WALLPro: A Load Reducing Geocomposite for Retaining Structures

ViscoLigno: A 4-in-1 solution for drillers

The formulation of drilling mud is one of the most important aspects in drilling engineering. This is because the drilling muds are capable of lubricating and cooling the drill bit and drill string as well as carrying cuttings out of the borehole. All of these funtions require appropriate viscosity of drilling muds to facilitate pumping, circulate the cuttings and transfer them to the surface. Apart from that, adequate gelling property (gel strength) of the drilling muds is also required to prevent drill cuttings from settling down at the bit. Noteworthy, some of the chemicals or additives commonly used as a drilling mud gelling and viscosifying agents are carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), xanthane and guar gum. However, these commercial drilling additives are subjected to thermal and biological degradation at temperature above approximately 120C. ViscoLigno has been formulated from oil palm lignocellulosic waste to overcome the obove shortcoming especially for deeper hydrocarbon wells. The rheological performances of the product as a drilling mud multi-functional agent showed that, ViscoLigno gave good gelling and viscocity building abilities at low dosage of 0.5 % w/w. ViscoLigno also can stand high temperature (200C which is equivalents to about 10 km depth) as a drilling mud gelling and viscosifying agent without the addition of other chemical. Moreover, this product capable of maintaining the pH of drilling mud at desired pH range of 8-10 at various temperatures without the use of pH controls agents; and not to mention that ViscoLigno is also able to act as a corrosion retardant agent for drill string and subsurface drilling equipments. These will definitely minimize the use of extra chemical while drilling, which will directly reduce the enviromental risk and at the same time reduce the cost of drilling operations.

UREX1: Food Grade High ORAC Ulam Raja Extract (Cosmos Caudatus) for Nutraceutical Applications

Fresh Ulam Raja (Cosmos Caudatus) has, for centuries, been consumed as salad with rice and sambal. Its health benefits range from anti-aging, blood cleansing and circulation, derived probably from the various antioxidative compounds found in the plant???s leaves. However, the traditional practice of eating Ulam Raja as a salad to enhance health is given less attention these days due to changed eating habits and lifestyle. Regular consumption of this health-enhancing green has become less convenient for urban consumers. UREX1 is a powdered, food-grade extract made from an optimum extraction process of Ulam Raja. Unidireational link mesh network over DVB-S(Direct video broadcast - Satellite)

Existing geostationary satelite network typically are bidirectional Poin-to-Point star configuration network or Point-to-Multipoint unidirectional network for transmission. The combination of Point-to-Multipoint unidirectional technology with bidirectional transmission in the form of a Unidirectional Link (UDL) mesh is expected to improve bandwith utilization, latency and cost. A brief overview of traditional Poin-to-Point configuration vs UDL mesh links is presented. We have implemented a prototype UDL mesh network in the lab using a ULE encapsulator in bridge frame encapsulation mode. Each UDL node requires an ASI (Asynchronous Serial Interface) card connected to a DVB-S modulator and must have (N-1) DVB receiver cards where N is the number of nodes in the UDL mesh network. Transmission of data is performed through the ASI interface at a frequency allocated for a node, while each of the (N-1) DVB receiver cards on a UDL node is responsible for receiving data from the other (N-1) UDL peer nodes.

ULC Agro-fibre Modular Septic Tank

Malaysia's most common form of sewerage system is the invidual septic tank (IST). There are an estimated 1.2 million premise with individual septic tanks in the country. An IST comprises two chambers connected in series. In the first chamber, solids from the incoming sewage settle forming a "sludge", while greases and oils float to the surface forming a "scum" layer. Effluent from between the scum and sludge layers then passes into the second chamber where further sedimentation occurs. Presently, prefabricated ISTs are made from fibreglass, a mixture of glass fibre and unsaturated polYester. Currently the production cost is about RM800 with the price increasing with the increase in oil palm industry are produced in large quantities in Malaysia, approximately more than 10 millions tonnes per annum. Subtituting the glass fibres with natural fibres reduces the cost to RM400.

TYPHIDOT

Typhoid fever remains as a public health problem in many developing countries. There is a need for an alternative test for typhoid that is rapid, sensitive, specific and cost-effective. A novel approach to outer membrane studies by Prof Asma Ismail and her research team has paved the way for the discovery of 50kDa, a specific outer membrane protein for S. typhi. The specific protein was used to developed a rapid dot EIA test for typhoid called TYPHIDOTTM that detects for the presence of specific IgM and IgG to the 50 kD antigen. The test became a breakthrough in typhoid diagnosis since 1896 and could produce results within an hour compared to 2-5 days via the conventional culture method and 2 weeks via the serologiccal Widal test.
