Agro-Pine (A Pineapple Harvester)

Agro-pine is a pineapple harvester, which is a device that simplifies harvesting operation. This device overcomes the conventional method of using machete which easily causes damage to the pineapple fruits and cause frequent hand injuries to users due to the sharp pines. AGRO-pine is easily manageable, less time and energy consumption and reduce workers requirement. Besides, it can reduce and avoid the occurrence of fruit damage and put priority to workers, safety due to the sharp pine and lessen workers back pain/body aches because they need not have to bend in order to harvest. It adopt a 100% green-technology.
After implementing AGRO-pine for the pineapple harvesting programme at the farm, time saving for harvesting 1 hectare of pineapple cultivation is 6 days as compared 12 days using conventional method. Besides that, due to tools efficiency, number of workers also been reduced to 2 persons/workers cost saving totaling about RM 1,080.00 per month. With AGRO-pine fruit damages was reduced from 6,323 fruits to only 537 fruits per hectare. It not only help the small-scale farmers in IADA project to increase their fruit harvest but also reduce on the cost of workers in their farm. The cost benefits analysis of this project was RM71,447.00 per cyle per hectare. For those farmers under IADA Samarahan farm that were tested with AGRO-pine, they had been an increased in harvest of RM 183,994.80 for an area of 53 hectares.

Fresh Fruit Bunch Grading

Fresh fruit bunch (FFB) grading is done manually and visually by workers at purchasing centers of oil palm mills. This is an old technique and needs some refinement to improve the grading system. In general, an oil palm mill process from 3 to 60 tones of FFB/hr or about 600 tones per day. Sampling method is done in grading the oil palm fruits. A new technique, using a numerical value rather than approximation technique to judge the ripeness of the bunches, is needed in grading oil palms so that it is more reliable. The most critical process in FFB grading is to categorize bunches into ripe, under ripe and over ripe. A new laser scanning technique to determine the quality of oil palm fruit was developed in this project. This research project established the correlation between the quality of oil palm fruits with the amount of reflected laser beam, and the prototype of automated system has been invented. The commercialisation potential of this new approach is immerse especially in the grading process of oil palm fruits. Relatively to other approaches, this technique will give a better performance of grading process. Besides that, this new non-contact technique using laser beam can be implemented in-process during the harvesting of oil palm fruits. This new approach of automated quality assessment of oil palm fruits will give a better accuracy, more consistent and faster grading process.

Rapid Detection Kit for Infectious Hypodermal and Haematopoietic Necrosis Virus (IHHNV) for Macrobrachium Rosenbergii

Freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii is commercially important for their values as food source as well as a valuable export product. Viral diseases are known to be a limiting factor in prawn farming as they cause serious production losses during acute epizootics.

Infectious hypodermal and haematopoietic necrosis virus (IHHNV) is one of the the major causes of shrimp diseases and was listed as the significant diseases by OIE (World organization for animal health). In 2009, there is a report on IHHNV infection in Macrobrachium rosenbergii in Malaysia. The infection was detected using the standard primer suggested by OIE which was based on 389 bp (OIE, 2003). However, after few experiments, we found out that there is something wrong with the IHHNV detection using the OIE primer where there is nonspecific band occured in PCR reaction.

Our hypotheses were either there are mutations occured in the IHHNV virus genome itself for our local freshwater prawn or the viral loads are low in the samples. Thus, we had designed a pair of specific primer of local strain of IHHNV isolated from freshwater prawn which is more specific in detecting IHHNV in giant freshwater prawn.

Our rapid detection kit for Infectious Hypodermal and Haemotopoeitic Necrosis Virus (IHHNV) in Giant Freshwater Prawn, M. rosenbergii has followed the Nested PCR which is designed for specific detection in freshwater prawn. This system can helps to control the aquatic viral disease by conducting screening program on the broodstock in order to achieves mass fry production which specifically free from the viral pathogen.

Thus, this detection kit will be useful to enhance breeding program in freshwater prawn industry in Malaysia as the current need is to produce good quality domesticated potential broodstocks.

Prototype for Tropical Ecological Data Warehouse (TEDW)

The current data collection on tropical lakes and wetlands data in Malaysia is carried out in a disparate manner which does facilitate for either database integration nor data sharing which is rather an inefficient use of resources. Such an issue is partly due to the lack of proper standards on tropical data warehousing that would otherwise provide for best practices for common platform and coherent efforts in lake managements. This,in turns remain the prime objective of this research, which is to propose a suitable framework for Tropical Ecological Data warehouse (TEDW) of lake and wetlands water bodies. However the implementation of ecological database is not straight forward and requires expertise in database programming technology which may not be possessed by biologist or ecologists.

Current ecological databases are structured in heterogeneous formats using different platforms. Thus, data sharing between these databases can be a difficult task due to the incompatibility issue. The aim of curve to user of the database this research is to provide possible solutions for the issues mentioned above by providing an ecological data warehouse (TEDW) with interactive user interface that will reduce the learning e. The TEDW system provide standard for data archiving and retrieval to allow seamlessly data transfer between researchers independent of the database platform used. The TEDW is also envisaged with the capability of proper data formatting capabilities as such the data can be manipulated by other data mining tools. It addition, the system is designed carefully to ensure compatibility with a common Geographical Information System (GIS)tool and data mining system.

The design of TEDW is robust that caters for different ecological objects, formats and variables which is desirable for actual data warehouse implementation. In addition, TEDW also provides for real-time data entry with web interfaces as well as basic statistical analysis and graphical representations. In order to facilitate data sharing with outside parties, TEDW provides for restricted access to authenticated parties.TEDW has the potential to be used as water quality management tool by agencies involved in water quality management.

POME-BAC For Commercial Production of Aquaculture Feed and High Value Fish

As the world's fish landings continue to dip, aquaculture's increasing foothold on fish production has ironically further depletes fish stocks due to its reliance on fish meal and fish oils for aquafeed. If this continues, aquaculture in the future will be unsustainable unless new, rich and cheap sources of omega-3 rich oils and proteins are found. On the other hand, the palm oil industry, Malaysia's largest agro-industry, generates tons of nutrient rich, oils wastes (POME) which are discarded or pollute the environment if untreated. This research project looks for that one magic bullet that will help solve the woes of both industries. This magic bullet may be POME-BAC the outcome of three years of research in UM.

Its originality is it is a yet the goodness of palm oil to feed man's most dependent food - fish. The miracle bacteria can remove 54.4 litres of POME to produce 448g dry weight of bacterial biomass which in turn can produce 1 metric ton water of rotifers at a density of approximately 900per ml, in 4 days.

Large Scale Cultivation Technology of an Edible-Medicinal Mushroom, Schizophyllum Commune (Cendawan Kukur) Using Mycelial Spawn

Schizophyllum Commune or locally known as 'cendawan kukur' is a delicacy popularly consumed by Malaysians due to the leathery texture similar to meat, it's good nutritional composition and taste. It has been acknowledged for its medical importance as it produces the polysaccharide schizophyllan which has been developed as anticancer drug. Our study showed that hot water extract of this mushroom which mimicks cooking condition, exhibited the highest antioxidant potential compared to other edible mushrooms in the market.

Presently, Schizophyllan Commune has not been cultivatedon a large scale world wide. In Malaysia, it is onlysold in the market during the wet / rainy season following a long dry spell. Hence, the supply is limited and seasonal.

We have developed an efficient large-scale method of cultivation using mycelial spawn inoculated on fruiting substrates formulated using various agroresidues such as paddy straw or oil palm pressed fibre which showed fast growth rate and high biological efficiency.

The mushroom industry is a global expanding industry with world market value of US $1 billion annually. Pleurotus species is mainly cultivated in China at produced at 4 million metric tonnes annually. The major mushroom species cultivated in Malaysia is P.sajor-caju producing around 24,000kd/day which is less than the local market demand of 50,000kg/day. One of the major problems that hindered the growth of mushroom industry is the shortage of spawn availability and lack of quality spawn. Good quality spawn is one of the most important decisive factors for the success in getting high yield of mushroom. The spawn of mushroom is like the seed to the plants. Currently, spawn used in commercial mushroom cultivation is prepared by growing mycelia on grains or sawdust (solid spawn), or in liquid media (liquid spawn). Solid spawn had long incubation/production time, bulky form and are easily contamisterilized. On the other hand, liquid spawn is prepared in fermentors which are expensive and carried out under stringent aseptic conditions. Both types of spawns have short storage life as the growth media used supports continues mycelia growth. We have adopted and optimized the technology for the production of plant artificial seed to invent a new method of production of P.sajor-caju spawn called artificial spore.
