The Bahasa Melayu Reading Text Test

Reading speed and reading error are two major components that can be used to determine reading performance in normal children, those with low vision or children with learning disabilities. At present there is no standard reading text test available in Malay Language. Therefore a standard related and non-related reading text tests in Malay Languages was developed to be used by optometrists, teachers, doctors, clinical psychologists or rehabilitation officers to assess the reading performance of school children. A set of manual and recording sheet were also developed to make it easier to be administered by the users. The Malay Language Reading Text Test was tested among normal school children and children with disabilities such as dyslexia. The findings showed that the Malay Language Reading Text Test can be easily administered. The Malay Language Reading Text Test developed can be used to determine the reading performance among school children in Malaysia.

Palm Vitamin E: A Novel Treatment for Knee Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis of the knee joint has the potential to cause marked limitation in a person's daily activity as well as causing several pain. The aim of this study is to assess the efficacy of oral palm vitamin E in reducing symptoms of patient with osteoarthritis of the knee in comparison to oral glucosamine sulphate. Seventy-nine patients were recruited in this randomized, double-blind study. Patients were allocated to receive either oral glucosamine sulphate or oral palm vitamin E for 6 months. Symptoms osteoarthritis index and visual analogue scale (VAS).This study was a prospective, randomized, double-blind trial. Sixty-four patients completed the trial (vitamin E n=33, glocosamine sulphat n=31). After 6months of treatment, both groups showed improvement in WOMAC scale. Vitamin E and glucosamine group had a mean reduction of 30.272(p<0.05) and 45.822(p<0.05), respectively. There was no significant difference inWOMAC scale between two groups. Similarly both groups showed significant reduction in the VAS score during standing and walking. The mean standing VAS score for vitamin E and glucosamine groups were 1.75(p,0.05) and 2.645(p<0.05) respectively. The mean walking VAS score for vitamin E and glucosamine group were 2.545 (p<0.05)and 3.596(p<0.05). Again no difference was found between two groups. The conclusion is oral palm vitamin E is safe and effective in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis.

Formation of Tissue Engineered Human Skin Using HPD as Biomaterials

The invention relates to a method for producing tissue engineered skin, more specifically it relates to a method for producing autologous bilayer tissue engineered skin to be used for skin grafting and cell therapy for various kinds of tissue reconstruction or regenerative medicine.
The objectives of the present invention are:
i)to provide technique of producing autologous bilayer tissue engineered human skin.
ii)to produce autologous human bilayer tissue engineered skin by using human keratinocytes and dermal fibroblasts cultured from a small sample of skin by mixing it with Human Plasma Derivatives (HPD).
Prior to culture the mentioned skin, skin is obtained from consented patient or any other sources in a sufficient quantity. Consequently, the above-mentioned keratinocytes is 30 isolated from the epidermis layer of the human skin which produces keratinocytes. Later or parallelly, the fibroblast is cultured from the dermis layer of the human skin in order to arrive into a fibroblast monolayer. Consequently, sufficient quantity of human plasma is extracted from human blood to form a HPD. Hence, sufficient number of keratinocytes and fibroblast cultured is mixed with HPD to form an autologous bilayer tissue engineered human skin. Tissue engineered skin is very useful in the treatment of burn patient, chronic diabetic ulcer, pressure ulcers e.g. bedsores, skin disorders, in reconstructive and transplantation surgery and for plastic surgery or any other similar usages.

Development of an Image Processing Algorithm for the Detection of Abnormalities on Digital Mammograms.

Mammography is currently being used in screening asymptomatic women to detect occult breast cancers in woman aged between 40 and 69 years on an annual basis. In order for mass screening to be effective a method has to be developed to achieve high accuracy, it is difficult for a radiologist to visually interpret due to a volume of images and eye stress. Besides, missed breast cancers has become a pressing issue with regards to medical-legal aspects hence the emergence of computer-aided detection (CAD) for mammography is a new and evolving topic in the realm of breast radiology. The objective of this study was to develop and image processing algorithm for detection and classification of microcalcifications and tumor on digital mammograms. In this study, MATLAB version 7.3 was used to program the steps: preprocessing, segmentation, feature extraction, feature analysis and classification of the abnormalities. Results indicated that the extraction and analysis had a detection accurancy of 83percent for the combination between Eular number and Entropy. Data generated during CAD analysis were further processed to reflect the accuracy of the detecting using Receiver operating characteristics.Pattern ecognitionand neural network-based classification technique has been developed to classify microcalcifications and tumors as benign or malignant. In conclusion, this study had showed that computer aided detection can be used as an adjunct to visual analysis by the radiologist for interpretation of screening mammograms.

Designing A Simple Method to Quantify Functional Stoop among Low Vision Children

Incorrect sitting posture with inappropriate repeated or prolonged body curve, head tilt and neck angles during near work can cause permanent posture changes. Hence the back body curve appears to be more stoop than normal. Low vision (LV) children are more exposed to this condition due to their visual impairment and how they use their eYes to do near work. It was observed that functional stoop occur among LV children. The exhibit is a tool which consists of a photographics observation and angle measurement hat can be used to determine the functional stoop angle among LV children.The findings can determine the right ergonomics for LV children during work tasks. Furthermore, this tool can also be use to determine functional stoop angle among normal school children.

The development of external fixators for bone fracture fixation: The work is a collaboration between the department of Orthopaedic and trauma, Univerisiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Hospital and the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering. The work integtrates physical, mathematical and computational engineering principles for the study of bone behaviour.

2. A non-invasive study on the state of the arteries using photoplethysmogram (PPG): A non-invasive study on the state of the arteries using photoplethysmogram (PPG) signals from different anatomical points in the human body has been carried out. A multi-channel PPG recorder ahs been developed specifically for vascular characterisation of diabetic patients.

3. Tele-consultation system: This system can be deployed in accidents and emergency units, allowing for a remote physician to have access to both the vital biological signals and slow-motion video of the patient. In order to have a wide coverage, the communication is based on the GSM network.

4. Development of a vascular characterisation technique for diabetic patients: For the development of a vascular characterisation technique for diabetic patients, protocol and appropriate setup has been developed to acquire PPG data in controlled conditions.
