The Spent Bleaching Earth (SBE), an industrial waste, is commonly disposed at landfills without pre-treatment. Some alternatives to resolve spent bleaching earth are burning, utilization in cementation furnaces, extraction for oil recovery and regeneration. In recent years, the rising costs of landfill and associated utilization methods have shifted the emphasis from oil reclamation to added-on values of SBE waste in the environmental applications. Therefore, it is an objective of this invention to provide a simpler and inexpensive alternative to regenerate the spent leaching earth.

Production of L-Lactic Acid from Fermentation of Hydrolyzed Sago Starch

Sago, which grows well with minimum care in swamp
and peat areas otherwise inhabitable for most other crops,
produces high yield of low-priced starch (25t starch/haJ
yr) (Ishizaki, 1997). Bioconversion of sago starch into
glucose is a sensible alternative since glucose (US$0.50/
kg) fetch a higher price than sago starch (US$0.20/kg).
Fermenting glucose to lactic acid (US$30-50/litre) will
certainly add further value to the end-product (Bujang,
2004). L-lactic acid, the natural isomer oflactic acid (found in our body), can be produced by microbial fermentation. Recent advances in the use of lactic acid for the production of biodegradable thermoplastics and cosmetics (skin care, toiletries, hair care products) have created an impetus in the lactate industries, which concomitantly acts as a catalyst for the growth of sago industries. The work in our laboratory has shown that hydrolysis of sago starch yields glucose (98%) which when fermented produces crude lactic acid (96%). This can be purified into L-lactic acid using powdered activated charcoal with a 98% recovery.

Novel Starch-based Gel Electrolyte Films Derived from Native Sago Starch

A novel starch-based gel electrolyte (SbGE)film with high ionic conductivity has been developed by utilizing native sago starch as the main precursor material. This novel SbGE film constitutes up to 80wt % of native sago starch and 20wt % of plasticizer, and is further being doped with varying amounts of different alkaline metal salts.Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements have shown that this novel SbGE film possesses comparatively high ionic conductivity at ambient conditions. The highest ionic conductivity achieved for the SbGE film sample with optimized composition at room temperature and a relative humidity of 100% was 2.55 X 10pow -3 Scm pow -1.

Materials abundantly found in the municipal solid wastes (e.g. waste papers, aluminium cans, glass and plastic bottles, steel and old tires) have been recycled or reused worldwide, in order to reduce the rate of energy and fresh raw material consumption or exploitation. One of the recyclable items produced in abundant by the textile and clothing/tailoring industries is fabric remnants. The most common use of such remnants is as cleaning rags. However,
initial R & D work at UNIMAS found that fabric remnants
can potentially be transformed into structurally firm
objects such as furniture and other household items.

Our cheap biodiesel produced from spent cooking oil (SCO) is an alternative vehicular fuel that can be used in compression-ignition diesel engines without any modifications, with performances reported to be similar to petrol-diesel. Malaysia has the capability to generate as much as 0.5 million tons of SCOs a year. Therefore, SCOs are readily available as low-cost feedstock for biodiesel production that may reduce the cost of biodiesel production by 85%.

Our bioethanol is produced via the second generation platform where no food or feed material is used as feedstock. Although cellulosic bioethanol may be produced from various other biomass, many hurdles dampens mass production. Bio-composite Sago Bark Waste for Interior Decoration Products

Sago grows widely in peat land delta or riverine areas of
Southeast Asia especially in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia
and Malaysia. Sarawak has a long tradition of sago
industry and over the years it has contributed significantly
towards the socio-economic development of the State. Sago
bark is one of the waste materials in the sago production
industries. The locals use the barks of the trunk as timber
fuel, wall materials, ceilings and fences. At present, sago
bark is processed through bio-composite method to produce
sago plywood and particleboard, which have potential
as building materials. However, this process does
not utilize the surficial beauty and other natural features
of the sago bark. An on-going product development effort
at UNIMAS has succeeded in converting waste sago barks
into numerous interior decoration products. Shredded sago
bark is cured and rebounded in moulds using resins to
produce decorative wall tiles. The low technology and
simple procedures involved in this process should allow
small industries to pick up this idea for commercial production.

Agrowaste to Biofuel via Microwave Pyrolysis

Palm kernel shells and saw dusts were subjected to microwave pyrolysis for conversion to bio-oil. Volatiles from these experimets were trapped in series of condensers and the liquid fractions of the products were characterised. Advantage of this microwave system is the short time needed to achieve high temperature compared to conventional pyrolysis system. The microwave prolysis system gives high yield of bio-oil with better heating values compared to bio-oil from conventional pyrolysis of the same types of sample.
