Participation in NSC is open to students who meet the following criteria: a. Malaysian citizens (MYKAD holders only); b. Form 1 to Form 4 (aged between 13 and 16 years old in the year of participation); and c. Attending national, private, or international secondary schools.

To develop and nurture a set of thinking, reasoning, researching, collaborating and creative skills amongst school students through engagement in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) 2. To instill interest in pursuing careers within STEM related fields that are of importance to the nation 3. To provide opportunities for students to showcase their scientific knowledge and skills

Registration for NSC is conducted annually via www.nsc.my, where Mentor Teachers must register teams and input participant and school details. Each team consists of three students and one Mentor Teacher, with no limit on the number of teams per school or per Mentor Teacher. Upon successful registration, participants will receive an individual ID for the Preliminary Level. The competition progresses through multiple stages: Preliminary Level (Individual Online Quiz), State Level (assessing scientific knowledge and communication skills), Semi-Final Level (STEMcamp with science workshops, hands-on activities, and industry talks), and the Grand Final Level (individual and group Science Quiz, and Prototype Presentation).
