The Malaysian Research and Development Classification System (MRDCS) mula diperkenalkan pada Kajian Penyelidkan dan Pembangunan Kebangsaan tahun 1992. Ia direkabentuk untuk mengklasifikasi dan menerangkan aktiviti penyelidikan di Malaysia sehingga lengkap butiran dan tepat. Klasifikasi ini menyediakan asas pengukuran dan analisa bagi aktiviti R&D dan statistic yang merupakan garis panduan berguna kepada penggubal dasar kerajaan, industri dan penyelidik.
